Gilchrist storms into billiards finals, Yapp reaches pool quarters

SINGAPORE - Peter Gilchrist has reached the SEA Games' English billiards final after beating Myanmar's Oo Kyaw 3-1 in the last four on Monday afternoon.

Oo raced to an early lead, winning the first frame 101-3 but Singapore's top billiards player came back strongly to win the next three frames (102-3, 101-2, 101-0) in emphatic style where he will meet another Myanmarese, Htay Aung, in the final on the same evening.

Earlier on Monday, Gilchrist was under pressure but with ice in his veins, he demonstrated his powers of recovery to leave Jaka Kurniawan stunned in the English billiards singles quarter-finals.

Gilchrist lost the first frame to the Indonesian but calmly shot his way to win the next three frames to triumph 3-1 at the OCBC Arena. He will meet Myanmar's Oo Kyaw at 4 pm on Monday in the semi-finals.

The 47-year-old Gilchrist had already won the gold in the English billiards (500) event on Sunday.

In the men's 9-ball pool singles pre-quarters, Singapore's Aloysius Yapp defeated Brunei's Ahmad Taufiq Murni 9-4 to advance to the last eight, which will be played on Tuesday.
