Why Friday kick-off?

West Midlands Police were concerned its resources may be stretched because of a planned protest march by far-right group English Defence League held in nearby Walsall tomorrow afternoon.

Manchester United will host Belgian team Club Brugge in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying play-off on Tuesday, so the game could not be rescheduled for Sunday.

Friday night matches will become a regular fixture from the 2016-17 season onwards. As part of the record £5.1 billion (S$11.2 billion) television rights deal the EPL signed with Sky Sports and BT Sport in February, around 10 games will be played on a Friday night each season.
