Lippi is new coach of China's football team
BEIJING • World Cup- winning manager Marcello Lippi has been named coach of China's national football team.
The Italian replaced Gao Hongbo, who resigned this month after a 2-0 defeat in Uzbekistan dealt a further blow to the country's slim hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.
Fifa names a wolf as World Cup mascot
MOSCOW • Zabivaka the wolf followed in the footsteps of Naranjito the orange, Footix the football-playing rooster and Fuleco the armadillo by being named as the official mascot of the 2018 football World Cup yesterday.
The wolf, whose name according to Fifa means "the one who scores," received 53 per cent of more than a million votes cast in a poll, beating a tiger (27 per cent) and a cat (20 per cent).
Drogba fined for refusing to play
NEW YORK • Didier Drogba has been fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Soccer chiefs after his refusal to play for the Montreal Impact last weekend.
The former Chelsea and Ivory Coast star stunned the Impact by demanding to be left out of the squad for their game against Toronto last Sunday after discovering he was not in the starting line-up.
Lee, Korda share lead at Blue Bay LPGA
BEIJING • Australia's Minjee Lee (73) and the US' Jessica Korda (66) topped the leader board on the third day of the Blue Bay LPGA tournament yesterday.
The American demolished Lee's commanding six-stroke lead on Friday, with both players finishing the day at 11-under 205 on the par-72 course on the Chinese island of Hainan.
Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn (65) finished two strokes behind on a day when she notched eight birdies.
