Sanchez a doubt for United clash

SANTIAGO • Alexis Sanchez could miss pivotal matches for Arsenal after suffering a calf tear while on international duty with Chile.

The forward, who has scored eight goals in all competitions this season for the English football club, will remain in Santiago while he is evaluated by medical staff. But a statement from Chile's national football association confirmed "a low-grade muscular injury" before today's World Cup qualifier against Colombia in Barranquilla.

Chile, who are due to play Uruguay next Tuesday, are fifth in their World Cup qualifying section with 16 points from 10 games, five points behind leaders Brazil.

Chile have won the last two Copa Americas but have struggled in the World Cup qualifying campaign.

They were awarded a fifth victory when Fifa ruled that opponents Bolivia had fielded an ineligible player during their 0-0 draw last month.

Chile will also be without another key player, Inter Milan midfielder Gary Medel, who is suspended until the Uruguay tie.

Sanchez's injury is a bitter blow for Arsenal, who are due to travel to Old Trafford next Saturday for a Premier League clash with Manchester United.
