Groundsmen work to fix pitches

The state of pitches, in particular in Marseille, Saint-Denis and Lille, is causing concern at Uefa, which is working to improve them as the championship enters its second week.

With 18 games played till Thursday during the month-long, 24-team tournament, the demands on pitches have never been greater at a Euro tournament. Some stadiums are hosting six games and wet weather across France is having an impact.

'E' is better than 'A' for tiny Bala

The small north Wales town of Bala has temporarily renamed itself Bale for the duration of Euro 2016 in honour of the country's most famous footballer.

All the road signs into the town of around 2,000 residents have been changed to Bale, at least until Wales are knocked out.
