SINGAPORE - The S-League's biggest signing, Jermaine Pennant, might have to contend with a role as an impact substitute in his team's opening match against Geylang International at Jurong West Stadium on Monday night.

Coach V. Sundramoorthy revealed to The Straits Times on Sunday that the former Arsenal and Liverpool man has just recovered from a hamstring injury and might not be fit enough to last the entire game.

He said: "He's just coming back from a hamstring injury so it depends on how he feels in terms of starting the game."

Entering the season as title favourites, the Stags will be keen to impress, especially after witnessing how Albirex Niigata ran rings around defending S-League champions Brunei DPMM in the Community Shield on Saturday night.

Without Pennant in their side, Tampines Rovers struggled and eventually lost 1-3 to Indian giants Mohan Bagun in their Asian Champions League (ACL) qualifier last month.
