MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Liverpool piled on the misery for Louis van Gaal on Thursday when they knocked Manchester United out of the Europa League after their last 16 second leg ended 1-1.

That gave Liverpool a 3-1 victory on aggregate and a place in Friday's quarter-final draw.

Anthony Martial converted a 32nd-minute penalty at Old Trafford to give United hope of overturning their 2-0 first-leg deficit.

But Philippe Coutinho pulled Jurgen Klopp's men level on the night with a sweet finish on the stroke of half-time.
