Football: LionsXII produce gutsy display to draw 0-0 at Felda United

Although they could not find the net, the LionsXII will be satisfied with a battling performance as they earned a 0-0 draw at Felda United in the Malaysian Super League on Saturday.

Before kick-off, Fandi Ahmad's team were eighth in the 12-team table on four points, three points behind second-placed Felda. But it is the visitors at Selayang Stadium who had the better chances.

Zulfahmi Arifin, the midfielder who filled in for gout-stricken centre-back Afiq Yunos, delivered a looping free-kick in the 29th minute but Khairul Amri could not steer his header into the goal.

Three minutes before the break, winger Gabriel Quak raced clear through but his ambitious chip sailed over the bar. And a minute into first-half stoppage time, centre-back Madhu Mohana nodded into the net off Faris Ramli's free-kick but his effort was disallowed for offside.

The LionsXII's best chance came in the 64th minute when Amri's swerving free-kick smacked against the bar.

Felda also had their chances, with the best opportunity coming in the 68th minute through Australian striker Ndumba Makeche, whose low angled drive was saved by the outstretched leg of goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud.

The LionsXII's next game is against Terengganu at Jalan Besar Stadium on March 14.
