Football: Chile's Junior Fernandes out of World Cup

ZAGREB (AFP) - Chile striker Junior Fernandes will miss the World Cup after breaking his leg in a Croatian league match, his club Dinamo Zagreb said Thursday.

The 25-year old Fernandes suffered the injury following a tackle from behind by Dario Rugasevic during Wednesday's match with FC Split.

Following an examination in Split hospital, Fernandes was transferred to Zagreb and underwent successful surgery.

But a Dinamo spokesman said that the player's recovery will take several months.

Fernandes, who has nine caps for Chile, has been with Dinamo on loan from Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.
