SINGAPORE - Balestier Khalsa stunned last year's quarter-finalists Kitchee 1-0 in their opening home AFC Cup tie on Tuesday night at the Jalan Besar Stadium, in front of 1,048 spectators.
Despite the visiting Hong Kong side dominating possession, it was the Tigers who broke the deadlock when Fadhil Noh sent in a cross from the right flank for Zulkiffli Hassim to fire home in the 31st minute.
Balestier striker Miroslav Kristic then had a great opportunity to put his side 2-0 up, after he was brought down in the penalty box by Kitchee goalkeeper Wang Zhenpeng in the 39th minute. However, his spot-kick was well saved Wang.
Despite a late onslaught by Kitchee, Balestier managed to hold on to claim a precious victory.
In Group F's other game, Filipino outfit Kaya FC beat New Radiant of Maldives 1-0 in Manila.
The Tigers will next travel to Manila to face Kaya in their third AFC Cup group game on March 15, while Kitchee will entertain New Radiant at home on the same day.
