SELAYANG - Centre-back Afiq Yunos scored deep into stoppage time to hand the LionsXII a dramatic 2-1 win over ATM FA at the Selayang Stadium on Saturday evening.
Sneaking in at the near post to prod substitute Zulfahmi Arifin's cross home, the 23-year-old completed a come-from-behind victory that was his side's first on their travels under coach Fandi Ahmad.
The Singapore outfit had gone into the Malaysian Super League clash looking to gain a measure of revenge for a 1-4 hiding at the same venue that saw them crash out of last year's Malaysia Cup quarter-finals.
But they got off to a bad start, when ATM centre-back Amirizwan Taj Tajuddin headed the hosts ahead from Bruno Martelotto's corner after just four minutes.
It stayed that way until half time, although Fandi's side did come close to drawing level, through Safuwan Baharudin's audacious effort from inside his own half and Hafiz Abu Sujad's attempt after a surging run.
Their efforts were rewarded just two minutes after the restart. Striker Khairul Amri did well to hold Norfazly Alias off, before slipping the ball past goalkeeper Syed Adney.
Just as the match looked destined to finish all-square, Afiq popped up right at the death to snatch an unlikely winner.
It was the perfect way for the LionsXII to head into the international break, with their next MSL tie on March 8 when Kelantan visit the Jalan Besar Stadium.
