LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham Hotspur pummelled Manchester City 4-1 on Saturday to condemn Manuel Pellegrini’s team to a third defeat in four games and leave them exposed at the Premier League summit.

City took a 25th-minute lead at White Hart Lane through Kevin De Bruyne, but Eric Dier drove home an equaliser on the stroke of half-time before Toby Alderweireld’s header early in the second half put the hosts in front.

Harry Kane claimed his first club goal of the season and Erik Lamela added a fourth for Spurs as Mauricio Pochettino’s side followed Juventus and West Ham United in inflicting defeat on the campaign’s early pace-setters.

“We didn’t play very well against West Ham United in the first half and we didn’t play well now in the second half,” City manager Pellegrini told BT Sport.

“The Premier League is always very difficult. That’s why when we won the first five (league) games, we didn’t say we were going to win the league. We have to keep working. In future we must play every game as a final.”

City could now concede first place to local rivals Manchester United if Louis van Gaal’s side prevail at home to Sunderland later on Saturday, while Spurs climb to fifth.

“I’m delighted with this brilliant result. I’m delighted for the players and fans who deserve this win,” said Pochettino.

“But we keep our feet on the ground. This is how we want to play. We can still improve and have more potential.”

West Ham and unbeaten Leicester City could both draw level on points with City on Saturday, the former hosting Norwich City, the latter entertaining Arsenal.

Beleaguered Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will hope to see his side end a run of four league games without victory at home to Aston Villa, while the late game sees improving Chelsea visit Newcastle United.

In the day’s other matches, Southampton host Swansea City and Bournemouth travel to Stoke City.
