Football: 10-man Lions fall 1-3 to Bahrain in Asian Cup warm-up

A TEN-MAN Singapore national football team went down 1-3 to Bahrain in an international friendly at the Bahrain National Stadium in Riffa on Friday evening.

With one eye on Wednesday's 2015 AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Jordan, interim coach V. Sundramoorthy started each half with drastically changed sides, making 10 changes at the break to ensure every player was given a run out.

Left-winger Mahmood Al Ajmi, who plays his club football in Albania with KF Tirana, put the hosts 2-0 up with goals in the 19th and 57th minute.

The Lions halved the deficit through centre-back Safuwan Baharudin - the only Singapore player to last the full 90 minutes - 20 minutes from the end.

But their hopes of staging a dramatic comeback were extinguished soon after - starting in the 82nd minute with defender Shakir Hamzah's sending off for a second bookable offence. Sami Al Husaini beat goalkeeper Hassan Sunny just two minutes later to put the result beyond doubt.

Sundram's side will depart for Amman today where they will undergo the final leg of preparations before beginning their Asian Cup qualifying campaign on Wednesday.
