Fencing: S'pore's Maxine Wong bags junior bronze at US National Fencing Championships

SINGAPORE - National fencer Maxine Wong won a bronze medal at the US National Fencing Championships in Salt Lake City Utah, on Sunday morning (July 2, Singapore time).

The 16-year-old clinched the joint bronze with American Isabelle Elizondo in the junior women's foil individual competition, which comprised 185 competitors. Americans Sylvie Binder and Morgan Partridge won gold and silver respectively.

Maxine, seeded 31st, beat second seed Natalie Minarik 15-13 in the round of 32, but fell to 19-year-old Partridge 8-15 in the semi-finals .

Fellow Singaporean Amita Berthier, who bagged a bronze at April's World Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships, finished 11th, while Nicole Wong was 46th.

The US National Fencing Championships, which started on Saturday (July 1), conclude on July 10.
