Singapore's men fencers narrowly edged out their Filipino opponents 45-44 to win the Asean University Games (AUG) foil team final at the National University of Singapore on Saturday (July 16).

The match was close from the start, with the teams remaining within three points of each other after every bout. With the score locked at 44-44 nearing the end of the final bout, Singapore's Zhang Zhenggang held his nerve to win the last point against the Philippines' Nathaniel Perez.

Apart from Zhang, the men's foil team comprised Justin Ong, Jeremoth Tan and Ong Chan Hao, who did not compete in the final.

The Philippines fielded Perez, Michael Nicanor, Sammuel Tranquilan and reserve fencer John Concepcion.

Indonesia placed third after beating Thailand 45-34 in the bronze medal match.

In men's sabre team final, which took place after the foil team final, Indonesia defeated Malaysia 45-31 to take the gold, while Thailand settled for bronze.

The AUG fencing competition will conclude at NUS on Sunday (July 17) with the men's team epee final and women's sabre team final.
