SINGAPORE - It was another early exit for Singapore's petanque players as the mixed triples side of Cheng Zhi Ming, Goh Wee Teck and Sheryl Sim failed to qualify for the semi-finals on Saturday morning.
The trio lost their final preliminary match to Thailand at the Padang in a 1-13 rout.
Out of the six games played in the preliminaries starting on Friday, Singapore only managed to get one victory, coming at the expense of Myanmar who they beat 13-8.
For the team, it was a matter of their nerves getting the better of them.
"We failed to snap out of the atmosphere," 14-year old Sim said. "We didn't snap out of us losing against ourselves, we didn't play how we wanted to. We didn't wake up."
Friday's matches were close games against strong opponents, but lapses in concentration proved costly. The Singapore team lost against Vietnam (9-13), Malaysia (10-13), Laos (8-13) and Cambodia (9-13).
There are two remaining petanque events at the Games with Singapore competing in the men's and women's triples competitions on Sunday and Monday.
Singapore have yet to win a petanque medal at this Games.
