Day 3 Wrap: Team Singapore poised to surpass record 1993 haul, now on 41 golds

SINGAPORE - Team Singapore are well and truly on their way to surpassing their record 50-gold haul from the 1993 SEA Games, pocketing a superb 15 golds across six sports on Day 3.

Late wins for the the men's and women's table tennis team pushed the Republic's overall gold tally to 41, cementing its status as top dog on the medal standings for the third straight day.

The man of the moment, however, was undoubtedly swim star Joseph Schooling, whose awesome run continued as he smashed Games records in the 50m freestyle and 200m butterfly on his way to golds no. three and four.

So good was the 19-year-old that former national swimmer Ang Peng Siong's long-standing record of 22.69 seconds in the 50m free - set in 1982 - was left in the wake of his 22.47sec effort.

Singapore's swimmers continued their dominance with four more golds - Tao Li (women's 50m backstroke), siblings Quah Zheng Wen (men's 200m backstroke) and Quah Ting Wen (women's 100m freestyle), and the female quartet of Quah, Christie Chue, Amanda Lim and Rachel Tseng in the 4x200m free relay.

The day got off to a good start when the female canoeists swept all three golds in the 500m races. They dedicated their victories to the victims of the recent Sabah earthquake.

Their exploits were closely followed by the showjumping team of Catherine Chew, Janine Khoo, Cheong Su-Yen and Predrag Marjanovic, who clinched a perfect win against Malaysia in the team jumping event.

The wushu contingent ended their SEA Games campaign with a best-ever performance of six golds, three silvers and three bronzes after team captain Lee Tze Yuan and the men's trio of Fung Jin Jie, Tan Xiang Tian and Tay Wei Sheng added their wins in the taijiquan and duilian barehand events respectively.

Peter Gilchrist rounded off a good day's work by defeating Myanmar's Htay Aung in the English billiards final - his fourth consecutive triumph in the event.
