A dominant Raffles Institution (RI) stormed to four team titles at the National Schools Cross Country Championships on Tuesday morning at Bedok Reservoir Park.
The RI boys made a clean sweep of the A, B and C division titles while the school's A division girls clinched its respective championship as well. This is the first time the school had made a clean sweep at the national championships.
RI's domination extended to the fastest times recorded for the boys and girls.
Shohib Abdul Wahab Marican, a 17-year-old first-year student, recorded the best timing for the boys when he finished the 5km course in 14min 2.8sec.
The fastest girl was Mary-Lisa Chua, a 18-year-old second-year student, was the fastest over 4.3km with a time of 14:21.2.
Victory was especially sweet for Mary-Lisa. She was placed 50th in her first cross country race six years ago as a Secondary 1 student at Raffles Girls' School but not only was she the fastest girl this year, she also captained her school to the A division girls' title.
She said: "As the team captain, I'm very proud because they ran the best the could. Anything could have happened but it feels quite good to win."
