The top awards, as announced at a gala in Monaco on Tuesday:

SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR USAIN BOLT (JAMAICA)
The sprinter won the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m relay gold medals at the Rio Olympics.

SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR SIMONE BILES (USA)
The gymnast won four golds and a bronze in Rio.

TEAM OF THE YEAR CHICAGO CUBS (USA)
The baseball team won their first World Series for 108 years, ending one of the longest droughts in sport.

BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR NICO ROSBERG (GERMANY)
The now-retired Formula One racer won the drivers' world title for the first time, with Mercedes.

COMEBACK OF THE YEAR MICHAEL PHELPS (USA)
The swimmer won five golds and one silver in Rio.

SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR WITH A DISABILITY BEATRICE VIO (ITALY)
The 19-year-old wheelchair fencer, who claimed her second European title, won the foil B gold on her Paralympic debut and led her country to a team bronze.
