Cabrera moves into lead at US Masters

AUGUSTA, Georgia (AFP) - Angel Cabrera grabbed the lead in the third round of the Masters on Saturday after going out at Augusta National in two-under 34.

The 43-year-old from Argentina, the 2009 Masters champion, started the day at four under, but by the 10th hole he was at seven-under overall and leading the tournament by one.

Overnight leader Jason Day of Australia was in second at six under after 10 straight pars with countryman Marc Leishman at five under through 11.

A further stroke back on four under and in the clubhouse was Matt Kuchar after a 69. Brandt Snedeker and Fred Couples were also on four under going down the back nine.

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods, hit with a two-stroke penalty for an improper drop before the round started, opened with a birdie.

But bogeys at the fourth and ninth, wrapped around a birdie at the seventh, saw the tournament favorite reach the turn in level par and still at one under for the tournament.

A birdie at the par-five 13th moved him up to two under but still five strokes off the pace.

Rory McIlroy, the world number two and winner of the most recent prior major in last year's PGA Championship, all but shot himself out of the tournament with a triple bogey at the 11th and a double at the 14th to stand at four over.

South Africa's Tim Clark, Masters runner-up in 2006, had set the benchmark early on with a five-under 67, having gone out in 31, to get to three-under par.

Phil Mickelson's hopes were shattered as the three-time former winner slipped out to eight over with a 77, while defending champion Bubba Watson, out first alone, came in with a 70 to get to two over.

Chinese 14-year-old Guan Tianlang, the youngest-ever player in the Masters, struggled to a five-over 77 and at nine over was third-from-last among the 61 players who made the cut.
