Local big names to coach kids for ActiveSG basketball

Trainees at ActiveSG's Football Academy have experienced being coached by academy principal Aleksandar Duric and his head coaches like S-League title-winning coach Richard Bok.

Now, basketball enthusiasts can also look forward to mixing it up with the Singapore Slingers and receiving quality coaching in the newly-introduced ActiveSG Basketball Academy.

Launched yesterday at Connaught Drive, the academy is a tripartite partnership between national sports agency Sport Singapore, the Basketball Association of Singapore and 2016 Asean Basketball League finalists Singapore Slingers.

The launch also saw a Singapore record set for the most number of people dribbling a basketball in five minutes, with 2,180 people getting in on the act.

Taking charge as academy principal is former national head coach and current Slingers boss Neo Beng Siang. The Slingers are also set to make guest appearances and share training tips.

" I am looking forward to sharing my experience and working with the team to create an academy where those who have undergone the training can develop the correct attitude and sustain their own passion for the sport, " said Neo.

"(The Slingers) are part of it. To build and to really train them, (they) will pass on their experience and knowledge to the young kids. We'll build from there and help out the youngsters."

National men's basketball vice-captain and Slingers guard-forward Ng Han Bin, is excited about playing a part in the academy.

"I love to give back to the community," he said.

"It will benefit them if we pass our fundamentals down to the younger generation."

Suitable for all aged five to 14 years old, the academy programme will be priced at $130 and thrice weekly sessions will be conducted over 10 weeks.

The youngsters will be coached in skills like footwork, ball handling, shooting as well as undergo strength and conditioning work.

The academy will commence in September and will be in five centre islandwide - Choa Chu Kang Sports Centre, Clementi Sports Centre, Delta Sports Centre, Hougang Sports Centre and Pasir Ris Sports Centre.
