Athletics: Day One of Singapore Open postponed due to haze situation

THE haze did not clear up in time for the 75th Singapore Track and Field Championships on Saturday, and the event was postponed after the PSI went above the safe level at around noon time.

Organisers of the two-day meet, which drew 288 athletes from 14 countries this year, decided to move Saturday's session to Sunday morning, should the haze situation permit.

Said Singapore Athletics Association general manager, James Wong: "It was a tough decision to make. Everybody is disappointed but it's something we can't control. Our No.1 priority is the health and safety of our athletes, officials, and volunteers."

A meeting will be held before Sunday's sessions at Choa Chu Kang Stadium to decide if it should continue.

Meanwhile, the Football Association of Singapore has yet to decide whether Saturday night's sold-out Malaysian Super League clash between the LionsXII and Johor Darul Takzim will proceed as scheduled at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
