Floyd Mayweather Senior may have put his son Floyd Mayweather Junior on to the path to becoming the greatest boxer of his generation, but chances are he will never win any awards for being Father of the Year.

Here are five things about the boxing-obsessed senior:

1. Baby Floyd junior saved his father's life

The elder Mayweather is infamous for using his son to shield him from a gunshot when Floyd Jr was less than two years old.

After a business deal went sour, his brother-in-law threatened him with a gun. He was holding Floyd Jr at the time. Floyd Jr's mother asked him to hand their son to her, but he didn't.

Floyd Sr later said he might have been dead if he did that: "I give the baby … I'm dead. That (bullet) would've been right here, in my head."

He was shot in the leg instead, and the injury ended his boxing career.

2. Boxing dynasty

The 62-year-old began boxing as a young teen, and drew both his younger brothers into the sport.

Floyd, Roger and Jeff all had decent boxing careers but Floyd Jr is by far the most successful Mayweather boxer. Floyd and Roger have both trained Floyd Jr.

They are famous for their defensive posture - the Mayweather shoulder roll - which Floyd Jr has used extensively to remain undefeated.

3. Mayweather Jr's first trainer

Floyd Sr decided early on that his son would be a boxer. He put gloves on his child when the son was only 11 months old, he once told the Los Angeles Times.

He also brought his son to the boxing gym as soon as he started walking.

Floyd Jr remembers his father as a hard taskmaster, telling the Guardian: "My father would beat me for anything I did, even if I hadn't done anything."

4. Did not speak for seven years

He was jailed for five and a half years for cocaine trafficking in 1993, and brother Roger took over Floyd Jr's training.

Resentful that he was replaced, Floyd Sr had a feud with both Roger and Floyd Jr that ended with the son evicting Floyd Sr from the apartment the son had given him, and taking away his car in 2003.

They did not speak for seven years. Floyd Jr told the press his father was jealous of his achievements.

About two years ago, their on-again, off-again relationship was rekindled, and he retuned as his son's trainer.

5. "Poet laureate of boxing"

He's known for writing poems that diss the opponents of the fighters he trains, and this time, Manny Pacquiao's coach Freddie Roach was roasted as well.
