A worker from China fell 19 storeys to his death at a construction site in Sengkang on Thursday afternoon.

The accident took place at the worksite of Qingjian International (South Pacific) Group Development Co. at Fernvale Street at about 2.45pm.

A Ministry of Manpower (MOM) spokesman said a group of workers was lifting a pre-fabricated bathroom unit by using a tower crane to install it on the 19th floor of a building under construction.

The victim, Liu Debao, 41, was apparently struck by the unit on the floor and fell off the building. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He is believed to hail from Shandong, and has a wife, a 15-year-old son and an elderly mother back home.

Investigations are ongoing, and MOM has instructed all lifting operations at the site to stop.

Police are investigating the case as unnatural death.
