SINGAPORE - A 36-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday (Jan 23) for her suspected involvement in stealing jewellery worth $13,500 on multiple occasions.

She would visit jewellery shops in Geylang and Little India and approach retail assistants to enquire about gold necklaces or bangles, said the police in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 24).

The woman would try the jewellery on while distracting the retail assistants, then leave the shop without paying for them.

Her identity was established by the police through inquiries on the ground after they received several reports of theft in jewellery shops between Dec 22 last year and Jan 9.

She will be charged on Thursday with theft in dwelling. If convicted, she could be jailed up to seven years.
