Super cupcake mosaic for SG50

What better way to mark Singapore's 50th birthday than by creating a super size cupcake mosaic? Betty Crocker is organising an iconic bake-off in an attempt to create the world's largest cupcake mosaic at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre. Gunning for a new Guinness World Record, the bake-off will involve about 500 volunteers from all sectors. The aim of the event is also to foster the Singapore Spirit of caring, sharing and togetherness.

China's PMI figures

China's National Bureau of Statistics will announce the manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) today, amid recent turmoil in stock markets and an overall slowing economy. News that a closely watched private survey on China's manufacturing sector came in at its weakest level in 15 months threw a pall over growth in the economy, unsettling investors nervous about the government's ability to manage the financial system.

Top youth swimmers check in

As preparation for the World Junior Swimming Championships, 19 of Singapore's top youth swimmers will take part in their first centralised training today. The elite competition will be held at the Sports Hub's OCBC Aquatic Centre from Aug 25-30.

This is the first time that the competition is being staged in Asia, and more than 1,000 young talents will fly in from over 100 countries to vie for honours.
