US-China ties affected, says Xi
Chinese President Xi Jinping has told President Donald Trump that US-China ties have been "affected by some negative factors" after a series of US actions in the past week. China yesterday accused the US of staging a "serious political and military provocation" after an American warship sailed near a disputed island in the South China Sea.

33 killed in heavy rain in China
Torrential rain lashed parts of central and southern China yesterday, forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes and killing at least 33 people, while the north wilted in a heat wave and drought-like conditions. Water levels in more than 60 rivers in southern China have risen above warning levels. Weather forecasters predict the downpours could ease in the coming days.

China-Russia ties 'at their best'
Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated yesterday that China-Russia relations are at their "best time in history", in remarks to Russian media ahead of his state visit to Russia. Mr Xi arrived in Moscow yesterday, and the two sides will sign a series of cooperation agreements.

Car firm flagged twice by Case
A car parallel importer is the first and only motor company to be blackmarked twice by the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) for questionable practices. SG Vehicles chalked up 39 complaints last year and 36 in 2015.

The Singapore Medical Council (SMC) investigated 386 complaints against doctors last year, including one lodged in 2011 and seven in 2012. SMC said it takes time to investigate because of the complexities involved. The process also allows for appeals.

Private home prices here fell by 0.3 per cent in the second quarter from the first, estimates from the Urban Redevelopment Authority showed yesterday. While this is the 15th straight quarter of falls, it is the shallowest decline since the fourth quarter of 2013, when prices first started tumbling, which analysts say is a sign that the market is bottoming out.
