From book-sorting machines to a room that brings stories to life, our libraries are full of high-tech features you might not have known about. Here are five of them:

1. The AutoSorter

When you return a book, this computerised system mechanically sorts it into the right category, making it easier for staff to shelve returned items. It even uses data analytics to identify popular titles for display on the ‘Just Returned’ shelves. At libraries such as Sengkang Public Library and Bukit Panjang Public Library, library patrons can take a peek into the back room to watch the AutoSorter at work.

2. Integrated display

Both physical and digital books come under the spotlight in these thematic displays. Curated by our librarians, the regularly-updated displays provide recommendations for readers. Available at Sengkang Public Library and Bukit Panjang Public Library.

3. Immersive storytelling room

At Bukit Panjang Public Library’s Stories Come Alive room, young readers can see their favourite stories come to life through projected animation, lighting and sound effects.

4. Doodle Wall

Teens can express themselves freely on Sengkang Public Library and Pasir Ris Public Library’s Doodle Wall. An interactive projector lets them ‘write’ and ‘draw’ digitally on the wall, which they can also decorate with magnetic accessories.
