Mr Philip Von Meyenburg, 37, is an entrepreneur from Switzerland living in Singapore.

Ms Neo Li Fang, 30, is a psychologist.

Yesterday, they were among the first 226 volunteers to complete their two-week basic training and become newly minted "soldiers" of the Singapore Armed Forces Volunteer Corps at a ceremony held at Maju Camp.

The group included women, first-generation permanent residents and new citizens.

The trainees will spend one or two more weeks familiarising themselves with duties required for one of the 17 vocations they have been assigned to.

These include roles such as medical trainers and security troopers who pick up rifles and patrol key installations like Changi Airport.

They will be required to serve up to seven days a year.
