An unemployed man, who kicked his Chinese national girlfriend and broke her nose over unrequited love was jailed for six months on Thursday.

Tang How Seng, 55, admitted causing grievous hurt to Ms Chen Xiao Mei, 28, a performance artiste at a club at Jalan Besar, at the McDonald's fast-food outlet at New World Centre, Jalan Berseh, on Feb 27 this year. A district court heard that Tang, a divorcee, had been in a relationship with Ms Chen since August last year, and had been supporting her financially.

Two months later, he suspected her of having an affair behind his back. On Feb 27, the victim and her three friends went to McDonald's and joined Tang who was seated alone at a table. Tang confronted the victim and they got into an argument. He then took out a knife and asked whether she had other boyfriends.

A scuffle ensued. The victim was hurt as a result and fell to the ground, bleeding. Tang then kicked her on the nose. He was restrained by her friends, one of whom managed to take the knife away from him.

The victim suffered cuts on her ear and legs as well as a broken nose.

Tang's lawyer Josephus Tan, who represented him for free, said in mitigation that Tang loved the victim and always tried to give in to her requests at the expense of his own financial well-being. He had to ask his mother for money and gave her a total of $9,000 to her on two occasions.

Tang could have been jailed for up to seven years and/or fined.
