Two NSFs injured after grenade detonates during training on Pulau Tekong

Two Singapore Armed Forces full-time national servicemen were injured on Friday morning during a live hand grenade training session at Pulau Tekong.

Safety officer Second Lieutenant Kamalasivam S/O Shanmuganathan and recruit Abdul Hamid Bin Abdul Smad were injured when the latter accidentally released the hand grenade lever while pulling out the safety pin at about 10.45am, said Mindef in a statement.

Second Lieutenant Kamalasivam immediately instructed the recruit to throw the grenade towards the designated impact area before pulling the recruit down and using himself as a shield. The grenade detonated in mid-air away from the grenade throwing bay.

Recruit Abdul sustained an injury to a finger on his right hand while safety officer Kamalasivam was injured on his left shoulder. Both were treated on site before being sent to Changi General Hospital (CGH) where they are under observation and in stable condition.

Mindef said live hand grenade training has been suspended until investigations are completed.
