SINGAPORE - As part of its plans to rejuvenate the Kallang River, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) is reaching out to the public for feedback on its plans to improve connectivity at seven areas along the 14km stretch.

At these seven locations, major roads - the Central Expressway (CTE), the Pan Island Expressway (PIE), Serangoon Road, Bendemeer Road, Kallang Bahru, Boon Keng Road and Sims Avenue - hinder accessibility to pedestrians and cyclists along the river.

The authority has plans to revamp an existing underpass under the CTE, which is currently only about 2m in height, to become better lit and give cyclists more headroom.

It also plans to build an underpass under Sims Avenue that would help connect Kallang MRT station to the Singapore Sports Hub, as well as a cycling bridge spiralling across the PIE, which would make it more convenient for cyclists and joggers to cross the 16-lane expressway.

URA executive architect Sean Tan said providing seamless connections along the river would allow for a "long and continuous park experience".

"This can have two effects. It creates an attractive environment for people, where they can escape the hustle and bustle of the city, and it can also connect communities," he said.

Mr Tan added that the URA was "encouraged" by the feedback it had received from the public on its plans to upgrade the crossings.

Members of the public can view the plans to rejuvenate the Kallang River, including the crossing upgrade plans, at the A River Runs Through It exhibition at the URA Centre along Maxwell Road, which is on display until May 2. They can provide feedback at the exhibition, or online at ura.sg/kallangriver.
