SINGAPORE - A Trans-Cab taxi caught fire, along Moulmein Road near the slip road from the Central Expressway towards the Seletar Expressway, on Wednesday (June 21) afternoon.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received a call about the incident at around 2.45pm. A fire engine, a Red Rhino, and two fire bikes were dispatched to the scene.

The fire, which involved the engine compartment of the taxi, was extinguished using a water jet.

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The Straits Times understands that the taxi was not a compressed natural gas-powered (CNG) vehicle.

Ms Gillian Giam, a 45-year-old yoga teacher, happened to be driving by when she saw the fire.

"There was a taxi with a lot of smoke and fire coming from the bonnet... a lot of billowing, black smoke," she said.

Ms Giam added that another Trans-Cab taxi had stopped behind the one that was on fire, and speculated that its driver was a colleague who had come to help extinguish the fire.

According to Ms Giam, the blaze did not appear to be very intense - while one man tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, another was standing nearby taking a video on his handphone.

This is the third incident involving a Transcab taxi catching fire in three months.

In May, a Trans-Cab Toyota Wish taxi caught fire along Marymount Road, near the Sin Ming Avenue junction.

On April 30, a Toyota Wish from the taxi operator also caught fire along Commonwealth Avenue, opposite Buona Vista MRT.

Four men, including a SCDF officer, were injured in this incident after the taxi exploded violently.

Trans-Cab announced plans to scrap 80 of its vehicles in May after they failed Land Transport Authority inspections.
