SINGAPORE - A power fault caused train service at several stations on the North-East Line to be suspended for more than half an hour during Tuesday (Oct 13) morning rush hour.

Scores of commuters were left stranded, with five stations - Buangkok, Hougang, Kovan, Serangoon and Woodleigh - experiencing blackouts.

Ms Tammy Tan, SBS Transit's vice-president of corporate communications, told The Straits Times that the fault had occurred at 7.41am.

Train service between Farrer Park and Hougang stations was subsequently halted.

"Emergency lights were activated in stations which experienced power black outs. Power supply was progressively restored from 8.02am while trains resumed gradual service from 8.11am. Full service resumed at about 8.20am," she said.

"During this period, free bus rides as well as shuttle buses were available between the affected stations. We apologise to all passengers for the distress and inconvenience caused. We are investigating the cause of the fault."

Disgruntled passengers were not impressed with the incident, with many taking to social media to vent their frustrations. Several said the stations affected were "dark and stuffy" due to the blackout.

Large crowds were also seen at the stations and nearby bus stops and taxi stands.

Twitter user Nieya Asni (@NieyaOzil) told The Straits Times that she was stuck in the train for more than 10 minutes at Hougang station when the power fault occurred.

She also complained of a "bumpy" train ride.
