Singapore Airlines (SIA) was named the world's third best airline overall in the annual Skytrax World Airline Awards held at the Farnborough International Airshow in Hampshire, England, on Tuesday (July 12).

The awards, which have 73 categories, are based on the world's largest passenger satisfaction survey of millions of airline passengers worldwide.

Dubai-based Emirates clinched the top honour for the fourth time, while Qatar Airways - which was first last year - slipped to second.

SIA was in second spot last year.

Rounding out the top five were Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific and Japan's All Nippon Airways.

SIA emerged as the best airline in Asia and also won the title for Best Business Class Airline Seat. It was ranked third - behind Garuda Indonesia and All Nippon - for World's Best Cabin Staff.

Commenting on the awards, SIA said: "We are honoured to receive these prestigious awards, which are a validation of the hard work and dedication of our staff around the world who ensure that Singapore Airlines remains competitive on a global level."

In the low-cost airlines categories, AirAsia was again named the World's Best Low-Cost Airline.

Singapore-based carrier Jetstar Asia was ranked fourth best low-cost carrier in Asia, while SIA's subsidiary airline Scoot was ranked fifth and local budget carrier Tigerair was eighth.
