SINGAPORE - By the end of next year, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to get from East Coast Park to Bedok Reservoir Park using a new route.

As part of a project called the Outdoor Play Corridor, the National Parks Board (NParks) is building a four-km path along Bedok South Ave 1, New Upper Changi Road and Bedok North Ave 1.

There will be directional signs and amenities along the way such as play equipment. It will also take users past Bedok MRT station and Bedok Town Centre. Construction will begin this year.

Meanwhile, the Land Transport Authority is also rolling out a cycling network within East Coast which will connect MRT stations, schools and neighbourhood centres.

These initiatives are part of the second phase of the billion-dollar Remaking Our Heartland programme in which three mature estates, East Coast, Jurong Lake and Hougang are being spruced up.

Other projects include enhancing the pedestrian mall in Bedok Town Centre by adding more ramps and seating areas along a 320-m stretch by next year.

Eight neighbourhood centres within Bedok Town are also being given a facelift with new features such as improving the landscaping and adding more distinct street furniture. Such works by the Housing Board are already underway in Chai Chee and Fengshan.
