New noise barriers for MRT tracks along nine neighbourhoods

SINGAPORE - Residents in nine neighbourhoods including Clementi, Eunos and Lakeside will enjoy more peace and quiet with new noise barriers being installed along MRT tracks in the coming years.

The Land Transport Authority has awarded a contract to install 3.5km of noise barriers at nine locations.

This includes a stretch from Pan Island Expressway to Simei Street 1, Eunos Road 2 to Eunos Road 5, Clementi Road to Clementi MRT Station and Jurong East Central to Block 107 Jurong East Street 13.

Noise barriers at Clementi, Eunos and Lakeside will be implemented after designs and site investigations are completed in the third quarter of this year. Costing about $17 million, the works are expected to be completed in mid-2017.

The noise barriers are expected to reduce railway noise levels by five to 10 decibels.

Following successful pilot projects in Bishan and Jurong East, the LTA in December 2013 awarded the first contract to install 10km of noise barriers at 16 locations including parts of Woodlands and Dover.

Installation works are currently in progress at Admiralty, Marsling and Sembawang and will be carried out at Ang Mo Kio, Pioneer and Yew Tee next. All these works are scheduled to be completed in 2016.

The second phase of installation of 9km of noise barriers is expected to begin in 2016. Further details will be announced later this year.

The noise barriers are installed along elevated railway tracks where noise levels exceed the National Environment Agency's noise criterion of 67 decibels averaged over an hour.
