The Sengkang and Punggol LRT systems will undergo maintenance works on Sundays over the next five months, operator SBS Transit said yesterday.

The works, which will start on April 23 and are expected to end on Sept 10, are part of the continuing maintenance work on the guideways that began in December 2015.

Guideways are the paths on which the Light Rail Vehicles move.

"Their maintenance is essential as they can become bumpy over time, due to wear and tear," SBS Transit added in its statement.

On the affected Sundays, one platform will be closed as power supply to its guideway will be turned off for safety reasons.

Workers will need to hack concrete and cut metal bars, but temporary sound barriers will be put up to reduce the noise generated.

SBS Transit said all these will not affect LRT services, which will still be available at all stations.

Trains, however, will operate only on one platform. The closed platform will reopen for service at 5.30pm on maintenance days.

SBS Transit added that posters will be put up at LRT stations to inform commuters of the works.
