SINGAPORE - A suspected hit-and-run accident involving eight vehicles occurred along Simei Avenue - next to ITE College East - at around 9am on Tuesday.

A Volkswagen and two Audis - one silver and one black - were badly damaged in the pile-up, which occupied two of the three lanes on the road.

When The Straits Times visited the scene at around 10am, police officers were present while the eight affected vehicles were still on the two lanes.

One of the drivers was Mr Chan K.C., whose black Audi was badly damaged at the rear and side.

"Our cars had all stopped due to heavy traffic when suddenly, I heard a 'boom' sound," the 66-year-old said.

"I am not too sure what happened but the vehicle hit me from the back."

Mr Chan, who was fetching his 65-year-old wife to work in Tampines, said that she felt pains in her neck, back and stomach, and was subsequently taken to the nearby Changi General Hospital for treatment.

It is not clear how the accident happened but drivers who were affected said that the driver of the silver Audi was believed to have been overtaking a vehicle before his car hit other vehicles and swerved to the road divider.

They also claimed that a young man - believed to be the driver of the silver Audi - was spotted running away from the accident scene. He was wearing T-shirt and shorts.

The Straits Times understands that the man has yet to be located.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted to the incident at 8.55am and dispatched an ambulance.

Police investigations are ongoing, a spokesman said.
