Tour bus runs over pedestrian at Geylang; man dies at scene

Both the front and back wheels of a tour bus ran over a pedestrian on Wednesday morning, but the driver did not know this until he saw an eyewitness waving and shouting frantically.

He then stopped and reversed the bus, unknowingly running over the victim a third time.

This accident happened at the intersection of Geylang Lorong 14 and Talma Road shortly after 8am. Police said they received a call about the incident at 8.17am. The driver was subsequently arrested and investigations are ongoing.

The victim, a Malaysian man believed to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Evening paper Shinmin Daily News reported that a cleaner from a nearby condominium heard the accident happen, and was the one who later stopped the tour bus.

The cleaner, quoted as 'Amir', said the driver did not know he had run over a man, and panicked when he saw the body. The driver later recovered and called the police, as well as his employer and family members.

Mr Alvin Tan, operations manager for Sun-Gee Travel, which owns the bus, said the driver had over a decade of driving experience and had been with the company for more than a year.

He said he received a call from the 52-year-old, known as 'Ah Koon', at about 8.30am informing him of the accident. The travel agency then sent a representative to the scene to assist police.
