A six-week islandwide hunt for the most value-for-money hawkers ended with Tian Tian Chicken Rice topping the list. It was followed by Singapore Zam Zam Restaurant's chicken briyani, Rahim Muslim Food's mee rebus, and Xin Lu Teochew's fishball noodles.

The hawker hunt was was conducted by the Retail Price Watch Group which was formed by the Government in Feb 2011 to keep tabs on excessive price increases of daily necessities and anti-competitive behaviour among businesses here.

From Sept 6 to Oct 18, the group used its Facebook page to collect hawker nominations for four categories. A total of 60 hawkers were nominated and these garnered a total of 2,151 votes. Each nominated store will be given a 'Really Worth It!' decal to display at their store. The full list of value-for-money hawkers can be found here.

The retail group through the survey also found that Singaporeans consider the taste of a dish, and not its price, when deciding if it is value-for-money. "It is a little surprising that Singaporeans assigned more weight to taste than price when making their evaluation," said RPWG's chairman Lee Yi Shyan.

"By uncovering popular and good value hawker food around the island, we hope to help consumers stretch their dollar while satisfying their tastebuds,'' he said.

He added that the list also helps to single out hawkers who have worked hard to deliver good value to their customers.
