Sub-courts to have special sitting on CNY holiday this Saturday

There will be a special sitting of the Criminal Mentions Court this Saturday, Feb 1, which is a public holiday because of the Chinese New Year.

The sitting will help investigation agencies, like the police, comply with the constitution, which states that all arrested persons must be produced before a magistrate within 48 hours. Where appropriate, the arrested persons can be released on bail.

A district judge will preside over the sitting. There will also be a field magistrate and field coroner on duty.

The field coroner will attend to crime scenes and grant approvals for organ donation under the relevant statutes. "These special arrangements are in furtherance of the Subordinate Courts' mission to administer justice," the Courts said on Wednesday.
