Ah Meng and other orang utans, the zoo's flagship species, were treated to the spiky fruit yesterday and made quick work of the thorny shells, husking their favourite durians with their bare hands and teeth.

The other orang utans include Chomel, Putra, Anita and her new baby. Selected Friends of Singapore Zoo and Friends of Wildlife members were also treated to the feast.

The Singapore Zoo was officially opened on June 27, 1973, and has gained a strong reputation for its conservation initiatives and breeding programmes.
