Story of the Year: Tussle over widow's $40m assets turns ugly by Toh Yong Chuan and Carolyn Khew

A seven-hour stand-off between an 87-year-old Singaporean widow and a 34-year-old woman from China ended yesterday after the younger woman agreed to leave the widow's $30 million bungalow, where she had stayed for a year without rent.

It was the latest twist in a saga that began in 2008, after the widow, retired physiotherapist Chung Khin Chun, met the Chinese woman's tour guide husband while on holiday in China.

The 40-year-old man, Yang Yin, later became close to Madam Chung and, in 2009, moved into her Gerald Crescent bungalow, allegedly took over her assets worth $40 million and brought his family to live with him there. READ MORE HERE


Feature of the Year: Tales of a taxi 'Uncle' by Toh Yong Chuan

On my fourth day as a taxi driver, I drove for six hours at night with just one five-minute toilet break.

It was past midnight when I headed home and absent-mindedly got into the wrong lane at the junction of Bishan Road and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1. The traffic lights turned green and I took off, almost hitting another taxi.

When I got home, my wife greeted me with a hug and said: "You have the taxi driver smell." READ MORE HERE


Commentary/Analysis of the Year: Watchdog must be fair to patients too by Salma Khalik

The outcome of a recent disciplinary hearing by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) raises a number of questions, not least about how much patients can count on the watchdog body to protect their interests.

The case involved United States Merchant Marine Michael Balensiefer who decided to get some aesthetic treatment done while recuperating from a knee treatment here in March 2009.

The headline is for Foong Woei Wan's Telemad column, in which she reviews Asian television series.
