Speak Good English Movement taps on food and beverage outlets to spread the word

Your morning coffee might soon come with a quick tip on how to improve your English language skills. At least 50,000 mugs sporting 10 different messages including "Keep on reading" and "Speak slowly and clearly" will soon be used to serve hot beverages at various food and beverage outlets.

The intiative is part of the this year's Speak Good English Movement which was launched on Wednesday at Toa Payoh HDB Hub. The aim of using the mugs is to reach as many Singaporeans as possible. Various hawker centres, coffee chains, cafes and restaurants will use these mugs, and outlets that have confirmed their support include foodcourt chain Kopitiam, Ya Kun, and Toast Box.

The Movement will also be receiving support from radio deejays of Power 98, Symphony 92.4 and Gold 90.5. They have made a commitment to consciously use Standard English while on air.

This year, the Movement is also looking to target working adults aged 20 to 39. There will be free English workshops at museum and libraries that will cover work-related topics. Companies will also be provided with a series of tips that they can disseminate to their staff once a week.
