SingTel has launched 3G data plans that will allow its pre-paid customers to specifically use popular social messaging service, WhatsApp, or surf on a particular browser. It is the first telco in Singapore to team up with California-based WhatsApp to offer such a service.

Customers who sign up for the WhatsApp plans pay as little as 50 cents a day and can send messages, videos and photos to both local and international WhatsApp users. A 30-day plan costs $6. The plans are capped at 1GB of data used via the messaging app per day.

Those on the Opera Mini Surf and Mail plans can surf the web via Opera's mobile browser on smart phones and tablets for as little as $1 a day. The 30-day plan costs $10. Data usage via the browser is also capped at 1GB per day.

Prior to the introduction of these two plans, the cheapest data plan SingTel offered its pre-paid customers was $1 for 10MB across seven days.
