SingTel launches speediest 4G mobile broadband service in Singapore

TELCO SingTel yesterday launched the fastest 4G mobile broadband service in Singapore, with speeds of up to 150 megabits per second (Mbps).

Called Mobile Broadband 150, it is twice as fast as conventional 4G services that go up to 75Mbps.

"Customers will enjoy an unrivalled experience for multimedia content, Web surfing, games and file downloads on the move," said SingTel's vice- president of consumer marketing Johan Buse.

The Mobile Broadband 150 service costs $59.90 a month and comes with a 5GB local data bundle.

Excess data use will be charged at $5.35 per GB and is capped at $94 per month.

Though the theoretical speed of the service goes up to 150Mbps, the typical ranges from 5Mbps to 40Mbps. But this is still higher than that for SingTel's 75Mbps 4G service, where the typical speed range is expected to be from 3.4Mbps to 12Mbps.

Customers will be able to enjoy the higher speeds at outdoor locations, but SingTel warned that indoor coverage will be limited mainly to Changi Airport, and shopping malls such as Jurong Point and Tampines Mall for now.

At first, the new service will be available to users only via external "Mi-Fi" modems and USB dongles as smartphones and tablets which can support the higher speeds will not be available here till the second half of the year.
