A Singapore-registered vessel was hijacked off the Nigerian coast before authorities secured its release, according to a statement from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

The container vessel Safmarine Kuramo was heading from Pointe Noire, Congo, to Port Onne, Nigeria, the statement said.

"There are 25 crew, comprising nationals from the Philippines, South Africa, India, United Kingdom, and Thailand. There were no Singaporeans on board the vessel," the statement added.

"At 0120 hrs (Singapore time), it was reported that the Nigerian authorities have secured the release of all the crew and the vessel. All crew members are reported to be safe."

The Safmarine Kuramo is managed by Maersk Line A/S.

"MPA worked with the company on the safety of the crew and vessel," the statement said.
