Singapore must count on youth to help senior citizens: Mr Masagos

With our ageing population, Singapore "can, and must, count on our youth" to help senior citizens, said Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs.

He was speaking to about 600 students from Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and Germany at the closing ceremony of a seminar at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College Central campus on Wednesday.

Caring for the elderly is one of the sub-themes which students discussed about during the three-day seminar. The other sub-themes are caring for people with special needs, and caring for the underprivileged. The students also spent an afternoon visiting voluntary welfare organisations here.

The biennial seminar has been run by ITE since 1997, and by both ITE and the Vocational Training Council in Hong Kong since 2007. Mr Masagos and Hong Kong Secretary for Education Eddie Ng Hak-kim were guests-of-honour at the closing ceremony on Wednesday.
