Singapore appoints ambassadors to South Korea and Iran

SINGAPORE - Singapore has appointed Mr Yip Wei Kiat as Ambassador to South Korea and senior diplomat Ong Keng Yong as non-resident Ambassador to Iran.

Mr Yip, who was the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' (MFA) director-general of Northeast Asia, will assume his post on Feb 23.

He was formerly consul-general in Shanghai from 2008 to 2012, and served as deputy chief of mission in Beijing from 2005 to 2007.

Mr Ong Keng Yong is currently Ambassador-at-Large at MFA, executive deputy chairman of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies and director of the school's Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies. He is also Singapore's non-resident High Commissioner to Pakistan.

This is Mr Ong's second stint as Singapore's non-resident Ambassador to Iran. He served in the same capacity from 2009 to 2011.

He was also Singapore's High Commissioner to Malaysia from 2011 to 2014, and to India from 1996 to 1998. Mr Ong was secretary-general of Asean from 2003 to 2008.
